About Smoothedgedesign

We Start With the Air Above the Stove

Smoothedgedesign is a kitchen remodeling contractor working out of Alga Rd in Carlsbad. We do full kitchen remodels, but the part people call us about is the part most remodels get wrong: getting smoke, steam and cooking smells out of an open kitchen where people gather, and wiring that kitchen so the appliances, the hood and the lights all have the power they need.

It comes from a pattern we kept seeing. A homeowner spends a lot on cabinets and quartz, hosts the first dinner in the new room, and by dessert the smoke detector in the hallway has gone off twice. The hood was chosen for its looks, hung where it fit the tile layout, and connected to a duct that was already too small. None of that shows up in a rendering.

How We Plan a Kitchen

We ask what you cook and how many people are usually standing around while you cook it. That answer sets the hood width, the fan airflow and the duct diameter. Those set the ceiling framing, which sets where the upper cabinets can go. Then we check the electrical panel against the appliance list, lay out the dedicated circuits, and draw lighting for prep and for serving. Cabinet and counter choices come after, and they fit around decisions that are already made.

Working in Carlsbad Houses

The housing here keeps us honest. A 1950s cottage near the Village may have a small electrical service and a roof we would rather not cut through twice. A 1990s tract home in Calavera Hills usually has a microwave hood venting into a cabinet. Newer houses in Robertson Ranch are sealed tightly enough that a big hood needs a make-up air plan. Salt air near the beach shortens the life of any exterior cap that is not built for it.

What We Will Not Tell You

We will not tell you that you need the largest hood on the market, and we will not sell you a panel upgrade you do not need. When a well placed hood on a clean duct run will do the job, that is what we recommend.
