Power for the Appliances, Light for the People
A kitchen built for entertaining is the most electrically demanding room in the house. Two ovens running for a holiday dinner, an induction cooktop at full power, a hood fan, a dishwasher going between courses, a beverage refrigerator in the island and a coffee machine on the counter. Older wiring was never laid out for that, and new wiring laid out carelessly trips a breaker right when the house is full.
We plan the electrical side of a kitchen remodel alongside the ventilation, because the two share walls, ceilings and often the same weekend of rough-in.
Starting at the Panel
Before anyone picks an appliance, we look at the electrical panel. We note the service size, how full the panel is, and what the rest of the house already draws. Then we run a load calculation against the appliance list you actually want.
This matters most in older Carlsbad homes. A 1950s or 1960s cottage or ranch house near the Village may still be on a small service with a panel that has no open spaces. An induction range typically wants a dedicated 240 volt circuit, often 40 or 50 amps depending on the model, and a double wall oven wants its own as well. Sometimes that fits. Sometimes the honest answer is a service upgrade, which involves the utility and adds weeks, and it is much better to learn that before the cabinets are on order.
Newer homes in Bressi Ranch and Robertson Ranch usually have the capacity. Their challenge tends to be panel space and the route for a new circuit through finished ceilings.
Dedicated Circuits
Countertop receptacles in a kitchen are served by small appliance branch circuits, at least two of them and commonly 20 amp. We add circuits for the appliances that should not share: dishwasher, disposal, built-in microwave, refrigerator, the range hood with its blower, and anything in the island such as a warming drawer or wine refrigerator.
Islands need receptacles too, and where they go is worth thinking about. Guests lean on an island. A receptacle placed where a cord will drape across a serving area is a problem, so we look at pop-up and side-mounted options with you.
GFCI and AFCI Protection
Kitchen countertop receptacles need ground fault protection, which cuts power when current leaks to ground, the kind of fault that happens around sinks. Current electrical code also calls for arc fault protection on most kitchen circuits, which detects the sparking of a damaged cord or loose connection. Some appliances do not get along with certain combination breakers, and we choose protection that meets code without nuisance tripping when the dishwasher starts.
Layered Lighting
A kitchen that hosts needs light that does three different jobs.
Task light is for cutting and plating. Under-cabinet LED strips mounted toward the front of the upper cabinets put light on the counter instead of on the backsplash, and they stop you working in your own shadow.
Ambient light fills the room. Recessed fixtures placed a little in front of the counter edge rather than straight over the middle of the floor light the work surface and the cabinet faces. We place them around the hood and duct chase rather than in conflict with it.
Accent and serving light is the pendants over the island and any glass-front cabinet lighting. Pendants have to leave a clear sightline to the range hood and to the people across the island, and they should hang high enough that nobody’s view is blocked while sitting on a stool.
Put the layers on separate switches and dimmers, and the room shifts from bright prep to a softer dinner setting without anyone hunting for the right switch. We usually suggest a warm color temperature for kitchens that open to living spaces, so the room does not feel like an office at night.
California’s energy code has its own requirements for efficient lighting and controls in remodeled kitchens, and we lay the fixtures out to satisfy plan check rather than hope an inspector overlooks something.
Permits and Inspection
New circuits, a panel upgrade and relocated lighting generally need a permit through the City of Carlsbad. The rough wiring is inspected before insulation and drywall close the walls. We schedule that around the ventilation rough-in so the ceiling only gets opened once.
